What is rest based training and why do I believe it is the best form of exercise for fat loss? Rest based training is to push until you can’t and rest until you can. It is very individualized and that’s why it works. It allows the exerciser to decide when they need to rest and when they don’t. Often times when working with a trainer they will put you on a set of interval resting meaning that after every exercise or set you rest for a set amount of time. This means you may be pushing for a longer time than what your body can handle and you need to go lighter in weights. Or the opposite effect and you may be resting for longer amount of time than you need to recover.
Now there are times where this is beneficial, but as a busy mom of 3 girls with a deployed spouse, I don’t have time to be sitting around in a gym waiting 3 minutes for my rest before moving onto another exercise and I want to get my biggest bang for my buck. I need my workouts to be quick and effective at burning fat and making me strong. Now contrary to belief you do need to lift heavy if you want a tone look. You can’t lift light weights doing lots of reps, that actually does nothing for the physique of your muscles. For muscles to grow they need to be loaded and they need to be loaded by force which is weight. Yet another reason why I love rest based training, because you can add as much force (i.e. weight) as needed to get the desired results.
Now from a fat burning stand point you need to lift heavy because you need that metabolism to be revved up for burning fat for hours or days past a workout meaning less workouts you need to do in a week and that is exactly what rest based training does. Using heavy weights and resting when you need to rest and pushing when you can push means that you are allowing your body to get a cardio workout plus a strength training workout all in one. Using both the anaerobic and aerobic systems at the same time! Pretty cool! However, what’s even better is that when doing rest based training you can do a 10, 20, or 30 minute workout and get amazing results and you can do it all from the courtesy of you own home if you desire. All you need is a set or two of dumbbells.
